Tagore's Raja Play

Raja play is an important work by the legendary Bengali dramatist Rabindranath Tagore. It was written in 1910 and first staged in 1911. It is a drama with a universal appeal that reflects the ideals of democracy and the nature of perfect governance. It is also an expression of Tagore’s deep and enduring faith in Indian folk culture and his desire to understand the roots of his own identity.

The play portrays the life of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the great Maratha warrior, and has become a symbol of national pride. It captures the significant chapters of his life, beginning with his birth and solemn oath of sovereignty to his years of relentless struggle and triumphant ascension to the throne. The play is a captivating blend of drama, valour and politics and can be enjoyed by the entire family.

This unique theatrical representation of the 17th-century Maratha king’s life is crafted by Maharashtra Bhushan Shivsahir Babasahed Purandare, and has over 250 artists. Its impressive sets recreate the ambiance of the Daftar rajaplay era alongside a meticulously detailed replica of Shaniwar Wada, the historical seat of the Maratha empire in Pune. Real horses, camels and elephants have been sourced for this spectacle along with a colossal fort, creating an immersive experience. Spectacular fireworks and the recreation of 17th-century scenes, including the era before his birth, his birth, his style of [holding] trials, Afzal Khan’s killing, his escape from Agra, and the thrilling coronation ceremony, have made this spectacular event one of the most acclaimed theatre productions in the country.

During the game, players compete to win rooms by using their Fate sticks and activating cards. The player who wins the most rooms and activates the most cards will be declared the winner of the round and receive a reward.

To increase the chances of winning a room, players can use their Fate sticks to pick an option from a variety of options that will be revealed after each round. These choices can include gaining additional rooms, taking an existing room and even having the chance to choose a new dungeon for their party!

During the game, players can also earn rewards by making their emperor stronger and unlocking more powerful cards. These rewards can include valuable items, new dungeons to explore, and the ability to level up their emperor by completing achievements. The more points their emperor accumulates, the higher the rank they can attain, and ultimately the more treasure and prestige they can claim for their kingdom!
